Personality
At Noxs core he's an insecure, self isolating, bitter person who covers it with a stone-faced expression and lies for his own amusement. He is, however, happy to help anyone when asked. Though he’s easiest to convince to do someone if it’s presented as an argument for him to win. He’s extremely argumentative and enjoys debating concepts whether ethical, abstract, concrete, etc. He enjoys learning, especially history, and is very inquisitive. Nox also loves writing, especially songs. He is the lyricist and singer for his band, and he occasionally plays guitar as well.
He dresses in a Mall Goth type style with baggy pants, chains, studs, and belts. He looks like a Hot Topic threw up.
His Astrological sun sign is in Cancer, moon is in Pisces, and his ascendant is Gemini. His Zodiac is the Tiger, and his Primal Zodiac is the Vampire Bat.
Relationships

Everyone in a higher tier Nox still feels like they have other people more worthy of their time so he still feels isolated from them also why his admiration tier is jealousy, he always feels an underlying bitterness even with positive relationships.
Alder is the closest to a father-figure that Nox has. He protected and helped him not only as a child, but also once he returned to Unova. He still keeps in touch with Nox now that he’s back from Hisui, and tries to give him advice.
N is one of the extremely few people Nox trusts. When Team Plasma began their plans, Christie took every opportunity to talk to N just to argue with him. She considered their constant back and forth the most interesting interaction she was getting out of anyone, and actually genuinely respected how he would stick to his convictions. When Nox was in Hisui, he could vaguely remember knowing someone important to him whose name started with N, which prompted him to name his Hisuian Zoroark: N.
His relationship with everyone in Hisui was tenuous at best, but after his exile he detests almost everyone. Those that helped him he still likes enough, but the clan leaders tick him off in a specific way for it. Melli has a special pass in that Nox thinks he’s such a rancid bitch that he loves it. Naturally magnetized to all that is insulting, argumentative, and annoying.
Family

Nox’s ties with his family are extremely tenuous and difficult. He loves his Grammy and will do absolutely anything for her, even if it includes being around the rest of the Maddox family. His grandfather Harold has been dead since long before Nox was born. The family refuses to speak of him in any capacity.
His relationship with his aunt Nadine is the least challenging, as she tends to be more supportive and understanding of him. Joanna tries to be supportive and kind to him, but the constant pestering and judging from his other aunts referencing Joanna and Dawn have sown too much bitterness in him. Vivienne and Eileen are the most critical of him.
Nox’s relationship with his parents is the roughest. He does not know his dad in any capacity, as his mother does not speak of him past insults she’s thrown at Nox. Colleen had met Dennis right as she went to start college, but after becoming pregnant suddenly, Dennis left and cut all ties. She refused any help from the family to attempt to prove herself as independent, but would have to quit school and settle down where she could. She’s always held a deep resentment towards Nox because of this situation.
Pre-Hisui

Early Life
Nox was originally born as Christie Maddox to Colleen Maddox in Floccesy Town. From her birth their relationship was rough. In addition to Colleen’s hang ups about Christie’s father, she hated being a mother at all. Christie grew up in a house filled with mostly bitterness and isolation. As she grew, she developed a natural magnetism to ghost-type pokemon, attracting low-level misdreavus and yamasks occasionally. Colleen detested this further–she did not care for pokemon battles or any pokemon she considered “creepy.”
In her nicest moments, she would tell Christie how she needed to learn how to do contests, or movies–especially movies. “Something respectable for a girl, and especially something that would make money to support her mother, who’s wasted years having to care for her,” she’d say.
By age 10, Christie had started finding ways to escape out of her bedroom window and would try to run into the forest outside town. On one occasion, Alder would find her crying under a tree and would sit with her for a bit, just talking. Christie wouldn’t talk much, but he would try to give her advice and give her a chance to air out her feelings.
Every so often she would run away and hide in the same bit of forest, and every so often Alder would find her. The more he’d notice her out there, the more he’d keep an eye on the area. After a year of him finding her, covered in new bandaids in different places every time, his gentle but firm prying finally got Christie to explain just how bad her home had gotten.
Alder immediately tried to figure out how he could help arrange a safer home for her, and luckily her Grandmother in Sinnoh would be happy to take her in. Colleen couldn’t exactly talk her way out of the situation, and especially did not want any serious consequences, so she sent Christie off soon after being confronted.
Christie’s time in Sinnoh was much better than before. Her Grandma loved her very dearly, and tried to make sure she was comfortable and safe. Unfortunately, her younger years had affected her extensively, and she would spend her teen years acting out. She tended to lie often, steal small items, and isolated herself from others. Around 15 she started trying to bribe people into buying her cigarettes that she would sit in the nearby Eterna Forest to smoke. She gained a small misdreavus that would follow her around the forest, and even wait for her to come back when she went home. Until eventually it would also follow her home and refuse to leave her side. Even with all her misguided behavior, she still loved her Grammy and would listen to her for the most part, kind of.
Unova
Right before Christie turned 18, her mother demanded she return to Unova. Her Grammy tried to set up with Professor Juniper for her to receive help with starting out on her pokemon journey, so she wouldn’t be stuck under her mother. Alder would also visit her at the start of her journey to give her a Larvest egg to care for.

During Christie and N’s final battle however, the Dark Stone at first does not respond to Christie. She convinces N to battle her regardless. The battle does not go in her favor at first, with multiple of her pokemon fainting. But when a strong attack from Reshiram blasts Mr. Bob, her Samurott, she attempts to jump in herself to help protect him. Stray flames fly around them with one hitting Christie directly in her left eye, blinding her in that eye and burning her face around it. The Dark Stone finally responds to her and transforms into Zekrom, who immediately attacks and quickly defeats Reshiram and N.
Alder and Cheren arrive to help Christie and they, along with Zekrom and Christie’s remaining pokemon, defeat Ghetsis together. Ghetsis is arrested and the group rushes Christie to the hospital for treatment.

Transition
Nox transitioned when he was almost 19 and basically decided to go scorched earth on his previous identity and treats "Christie" as an entirely different person he has never met except for with a select few people. Only his family, Alder, and N officially know. A few of his past friends have a suspicion but he has not/will not address it with them. Volo notably does not know, as Nox has only discussed his post-transition past when asked about pre-Hisui.
Christie wasn't very personally known by many people anyway since she was very confrontational and self isolating. When she disappeared after fighting Team Plasma, people rightfully assumed she'd moved back with her grandmother in Sinnoh, but they incorrectly figured she just never came back to Unova. The Maddox family is also so large that, if someone finds his last name, it’s easy for him to use the cover of being vaguely related to her instead.
It’s less a matter of him not wanting to associate with having been a girl, and more him hating his childhood and using it as a way to cut those memories off from himself.

NoxVolo

When Nox first fell, Volo hated him. Full resentment. Full bitterness. He was shooting glares at him when he thought he wasn't looking. On the rare occasion Nox actually saw him glaring though he thought it was so cute. Nox thought his over-the-top customer service bit was hilarious and he really wanted to get under his skin and see what he was genuinely like, so whenever he'd catch him glaring he just thought it was funny. Nox wanted to peel him like an orange. He also just really enjoyed getting him to infodump cause he liked listening, and trying to argue lmao.
Nox was the first to confess. It was a bit into his exile, but for a while prior him and Volo discussed what loves like, how's it supposed to feel, what's it mean because nox likes talking abt theory/ethics/open ended questions (cause all he likes doing is arguing always about everything u could be agreeing with him and hell still argue with you about it anyway he's the debate club horror) but also because neither of them are used to that sort of thing. Even in Noxs extremely limited memory it's hard for him to even get the vibe/feeling that he had ppl he loved before.
For Volo, his parents died when he was young and while he's related to Cogita it's distant and she doesn't do much more than letting him vaguely be around occasionally, so he mostly spent the last decade drifting around. also being connectionless is beneficial to him in the end. Any ties with others adds unneeded guilt that'll make things more difficult.
So both of them debate the various possible definitions, feelings, and reasons out of their need to yap, and that weird friendship they've formed/despite Volo initially bitterly hating him when Nox fell. Until Noxs exile, where they go from meeting suspiciously often to stuck together at all times, and eventually Nox kinda just says he thinks he might love Volo cause he wants to protect him, make sure he’s happy, and also maybe kiss a little.
